The Business Owner’s Guide to IT Support in Wilmington: 6 Things You Need to Know

Why IT Support Matters for Your Wilmington Business

In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, reliable IT support isn’t just a convenience—it’s essential. Whether you’re a small startup or a growing enterprise, dependable IT services make the difference between thriving and falling behind. For business owners in Wilmington, having a solid IT support strategy ensures your systems run smoothly and securely, helping you stay competitive and productive.

From cybersecurity threats to system downtime and hardware issues, managing IT infrastructure can quickly become overwhelming—especially if technology isn’t your strong suit. That’s why finding the right IT support in Wilmington is crucial. In this guide, we cover what IT support includes, common tech challenges, and how managed IT services can help your business stay ahead.

What Is IT Support?

IT support covers a broad range of services to keep your business technology operating effectively. It goes beyond just fixing problems—modern IT support helps businesses grow through proactive, secure, and optimized solutions:

Common IT Challenges Businesses Face

1. Unexpected Downtime

System outages or slow performance cost businesses time and money. Causes may include hardware failures, power loss, or poor network connectivity.

2. Cybersecurity Threats

Ransomware, phishing, and malware attacks are on the rise. Without strong protection, your company could face data loss, compliance issues, and reputation damage.

3. Limited In-House IT Expertise

Many businesses lack a dedicated IT team. This can lead to missed updates, prolonged issues, and security vulnerabilities that leave your business exposed.

4. Scaling Challenges

As you grow, outdated systems may limit efficiency. Scalable IT solutions are necessary to support business expansion and productivity.

5. Vendor Management

Managing multiple tech vendors can cause confusion and delays. An IT provider can streamline communication and reduce unnecessary costs.

6. Regulatory Compliance

Industries like healthcare and finance face strict compliance rules. Noncompliance risks fines and legal consequences.

Why Hiring an IT Company Before Launching Your Business is a Smart Move

Hire an IT Company Before Starting Your Business: 3 Reasons Why It Matters

Starting a business comes with countless decisions—from choosing the right location to hiring your first employees. However, one of the most crucial decisions that often gets overlooked is whether to hire an IT company before starting your business.

How you structure your technology from day one can impact productivity, security, and long-term success.

Having an IT company on board from the beginning ensures your business is built on a strong, scalable foundation, preventing costly mistakes down the road. Here’s why partnering with an IT provider early is one of the smartest moves you can make.

Why Hiring an IT Company Before Starting Your Business Saves Time and Money

Many new businesses take a “figure it out later” approach to IT, often leading to costly mistakes and inefficiencies. Without proper planning, you may:

  • Overspend on unnecessary hardware or software.
  • Choose systems that don’t scale, leading to expensive replacements later.
  • Overlook security risks, making your business vulnerable from day one.

An experienced IT company helps plan your infrastructure from the ground up, ensuring you invest in the right tools, software, and security measures that grow with your business—saving time and money in the long run.

When you hire an IT company before starting your business, you avoid overspending on tools that won’t scale.

Expert Guidance on Structure, Layout, and Purchases

Your IT setup should be tailored to how your business operates. An IT company works with you to design a system that supports:

  • Office Layout & Network Infrastructure – Ensuring optimal placement of routers, servers, and workstations for efficiency and security.
  • Device & Software Selection – Helping you choose the best computers, cloud solutions, and security tools for your specific needs.
  • Scalability & Remote Access – Setting up systems that allow your business to expand seamlessly and support remote work if needed.

By planning before you open your doors, you’ll avoid IT headaches that could slow down operations as your business grows.

Starting strong with the right tech setup is easier when you hire an IT company before starting your business.

Cybersecurity & Compliance from Day One

Cybersecurity isn’t something to think about after your business is up and running—it should be a priority from the start. A data breach early on can be devastating, leading to financial loss, legal issues, and reputational damage.

An IT company will:

  • Implement cybersecurity protections to safeguard sensitive customer and business data.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations (HIPAA, PCI, etc.) if your business handles financial or personal information.
  • Train employees on security best practices to prevent internal risks.

With the right security measures from day one, your business will be protected against cyber threats and costly breaches.

Take the Next Step: Set Your Business Up for Success

Technology is the backbone of modern business. By partnering with an IT company from the start, you’ll avoid unnecessary costs, streamline operations, and protect your business from security risks.

According to Forbes, businesses that ignore IT planning often face costly consequences later.

At ACS, we help new businesses in Wilmington, NC, and beyond build IT systems that support long-term success. Whether you need help choosing the right technology, setting up secure networks, or planning for future growth, we’re here to help.

The Growing Cybersecurity Threat in Education

Cybersecurity in Independent Schools – Protecting the Future of Education

Protecting What Matters Most

Independent schools today face a digital crossroads. On one hand, technology has transformed learning environments, communication, and administrative processes. On the other hand, these advancements have made schools an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals. In 2023, cyberattacks on educational institutions, including independent schools, reached record levels. According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), independent schools are now one of the most vulnerable sectors to cyber threats.

Your school’s mission is to educate and inspire future leaders—ours is to ensure you can do that safely in today’s digital world. This guide highlights independent schools’ critical cybersecurity challenges, why they’re at risk, and how to take actionable steps toward a more secure future.

Cyber Threats Are Escalating

Why Are Independent Schools a Target?

  1. Valuable Data: Schools store vast amounts of sensitive information—personal details, health records, financial data—making them prime targets for data theft.
  2. Aging Infrastructure: Many schools operate on outdated IT systems, creating weak points that hackers can exploit.
  3. Limited Cybersecurity Budgets: Smaller schools often lack the resources to invest in top-tier cybersecurity solutions.
  4. Expanded Attack Surfaces: The widespread use of online learning tools and cloud-based platforms increases potential entry points for cybercriminals.

These vulnerabilities have made education the most targeted sector for data breaches, with ransomware, phishing, and DDoS attacks rising.

What Happens When Cyberattacks Hit

The consequences of a cyberattack on your school can be severe:

  • Financial Losses: Ransom payments, data recovery costs, legal fees, and regulatory fines can quickly add up. For schools with tight budgets, these expenses can be crippling.
  • Operational Disruption: Cyberattacks can bring school operations to a standstill, disrupt learning environments, and create significant downtime.
  • Reputation Damage: Trust is everything. A data breach can erode trust with parents, students, and staff, potentially leading to declining enrollment.

Legal and Regulatory Risks: Schools are legally obligated to protect sensitive data. A breach can lead to lawsuits and penalties for non-compliance with data protection regulations.

NAIS data for 2023 revealed that cybercriminals have exploited these vulnerabilities at an increasing rate. The education sector had more breaches than any other industry, highlighting the need for immediate action.

How Independent Schools Can Stay Secure

At Atlantic Computer Services (ACS), we believe proactive protection is key to safeguarding your school. Here’s how we help independent schools build a robust cybersecurity framework:

  1. Comprehensive Cybersecurity Assessments

  1. Advanced Cybersecurity Tools
  • Our solutions include firewalls, intrusion detection systems, encryption protocols, and multi-factor authentication—all designed to block potential threats before they can cause harm.
  1. Staff and Student Training
  • Human error is the number one cause of cyber incidents. We provide engaging, easy-to-understand training sessions that teach your staff and students how to recognize phishing scams and create strong passwords.
  1. Incident Response Plans
  • A strong defense is essential, but knowing how to respond to an attack is equally critical. We help your school develop a customized incident response plan to minimize damage and recover quickly.
  1. Ongoing Monitoring and Support
  • Cyber threats don’t take breaks, and neither do we. Our 24/7 monitoring services ensure that your school’s network is always protected.
  1. Regular Software Updates and Patching
  • Keeping your software up to date is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent attacks. We handle all updates and patches to close vulnerabilities before they’re exploited.
  1. Data Backup and Recovery Solutions
  • In the event of an attack, having reliable backups ensures that critical data can be restored quickly. We implement robust backup solutions and test them regularly.

Dropbox Suffers Major Breach in Phishing Attack

It’s no secret that cyber attacks are on the rise, and that no company is immune to them. Dropbox, a cloud storage company, was the lastest victim when their GitHub account was compromised. This allowed attackers access to 130 code repositories, which contained sensitive data.

Dropbox was notified of a potential breach on October 14th from GitHub, who observed suspicious activity coming from the account starting one day earlier.

On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, Dropbox released an announcement that said, “our investigation has found that the code accessed by this threat actor contained some credentials—primarily, API keys—used by Dropbox developers.”

The data contains the names and email addresses of a few thousand Dropbox employees, current customers, past customers, sales leads, and vendors.

A successful email phishing campaign, targeting Dropbox employees and pretending to be from CircleCI (a continuous integration and delivery platform), has been attributed to a recent data breach. The emails directed the victims to a landing page where they were asked to enter their GitHub credentials.

Dropbox states that the hackers did not manage to get access to customers’ accounts, passwords, or payment information. In addition, none of Dropbox’s core apps or infrastructure were compromised. As a result of this attack, Dropbox is taking further steps to secure its environment by using WebAuthn and hardware tokens or biometrics.

It was almost immediately after the compromise that GitHub detected the exfiltration of content from private repositories. The threat actors used VPNs and proxy services to make it more difficult to trace and identify them.

The Dropbox security breach is just one example of how even big companies are susceptible to damage by sophisticated cyber attacks. But while Dropbox was quickly mitigate the damage caused by the attack, it’s a reminder to all businesses that they’re always vulnerable to these kinds of threats. Therefore, it’s important for employers educate their staff on how identify potential cyberattacks.
